A class driver is a bit different from regular device drivers. It stills serves the important role of delivering messages between the operating system, hardware and software. However, unless most device drivers, a class driver is not specific to a certain model of hardware. It can be used with by various hardware pieces that are of the same type.
For example, class drivers are common with USB (Universal Serial Bus) hardware. In these cases, the hardware devices have the USB protocol in common and some pieces with similar functions can utilize the same driver. Another example of class drivers being used is CD-ROMs. If manufacturers follow an established protocol, class drivers can operate a variety of CD-ROMs from different companies.

Always innovative, ParetoLogic is proud to announce that DriverCure is
compatible with the Windows® 7 32-bit and 64-bit Operating System!
Class drivers are sometimes referred to as a base or ancestor class for more specific device drivers. The more specific drivers are produced especially for a certain model of hardware (printer, scanner, mouse, etc.) and offer different or enhanced functions.
In most cases, hardware-specific drivers will allow you to get the most out of your hardware devices compared to a class driver. While class drivers might allow your hardware to do rudimentary tasks, a specific device driver opens up more functions and better performance. Think of it like the difference between communicating without language: you can point, wave, and generally get the idea across with class drivers. But only specific drivers can communicate with language and detail, and the understanding here is what allows you to get the most out of your hardware.
