What is a device driver?

When it comes to your computer, device drivers might be the most underrated part. Drivers are critical for the operation of your hardware devices, including printers, scanners, graphics cards and sound cards.

Device drivers act as 'translators' between your hardware, software and operating system. Hardware devices use specific and specialized commands. However, most software employs more generic commands. The device driver takes instruction from the software, such as hitting "Print" inMicrosoft Word, and translates it into something your printer can understand. The driver can also receive information back from the device and pass that along, properly translated, to the software.

Device drivers are uniquely designed for the hardware and the operating system. This means that if you switched to a new printer, you need to ensure you update your driver, because the one from your previous hardware will not work. As well, if you have made the transition from Windows XP to Vista, for example, you will need to update to Vista-compatible drivers.

When there is no device driver, the communication between your hardware and software can be cut off. In this case your printer or scanner will be nothing more than an expensive, shiny desk decoration. Some hardware might operate in what is known as "generic mode" without the correct driver. For example, in generic mode a monitor/video card might display only in low resolution. This means that you are not getting the full value out of your hardware. It is also possible to have a corrupted or incompatible driver. In these cases, your devices' performance can be erratic and frustrating.

Hardware companies often make improvements and release new drivers for their various models. These updated drivers fix bugs, improve performance and introduce new features. By keeping your device drivers updated you can ensure you are getting the most out of your hardware and increasing your PC's stability.
