What is a filter driver?
Filter drivers can add value to hardware or support specialized software on a PC. They generally are installed to do a specific function, and should not affect the way the regular drivers associated with the hardware or software function. For example, the HERMES SoftLabs File System Filter Driver can be used to intercept file system events (the opening, creating, reading, writing and closing of files) and allow the offloading of files to a backend storage solution.
The driver is installed in the driver framework hierarchy so that it is either above or below the primary driver. If it is above the primary driver, which is also known as the function driver, it is called an upper-level filter driver. On the other hand, if it "sits" below the primary driver it is called a lower-level filter driver.

These drivers can be written by Microsoft for the various versions of the Windows operating system or by the hardware vendor. Filters can also be written for a specific hardware device or to work with class drivers, which can communicate with a number of similar hardware, such as mice. For example, an ACPI bus filter could be added to deal with power management issues for different hardware.
