What is FireWire?

FireWire is the brand name Apple uses for its high-speed serial bus interface. FireWire follows the IEEE 1394 interface standards. Other brand names that use the IEEE 1394 interface are i.LINK (Sony) and Lynx (Texas Instruments). While USB devices are more popular for PCs, it is possible to have IEEE 1394 ports on your Windows computer. The IEEE 1394 allows the transferring of large amounts of data between computers and hardware devices. For this reason, it isoften used with digital devices such as camcorders, digital tapes, video disks and music systems. High speed devices such as hard disk drives and printers also can make use of it.

In 2001, FireWire received a Primetime Emmy Engineering Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences because of the impact FireWire had had on television. FireWire and IEEE 1394 technology emerged at that time as the primary way of moving video from digital camcorders (such as those by Kodak, Canon, JVC and Sony) onto both PCs and Macs. This helped make things easier for consumers and less expensive for professionals.

Other features of FireWire and the IEEE 1394 technology are hot swapping and Plug and Play. Hot swapping, also called hot plugging, means that you can connect and disconnect hardware devices without shutting the system down. While most FireWire devices are Plug and Play at times device drivers are needed for them to operate.

In many regards, FireWire has replaced the parallel Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) device. For many computer users, the Universal Serial Port (USB) remains more popular than FireWire and other IEEE 1394 interfaces. You cannot use FireWire in USB ports and vice versa. Also, there are no FireWire to USB adapters. However, some manufacturers do make dual FireWire/USB hubs.
