What is the Kernel-Mode Driver Framework?

When it comes to computers, kernel has nothing to do with popcorn. The Kernel-Mode Driver Framework was created by Microsoft to help driver writers create device drivers for Windows 2000 and newer operating systems.

The Kernel-Mode Driver Framework is built on the Windows Driver Mode. It supports drivers built in WDM and runs on it. WDM has been used since Windows 98.

The KMDF takes advantage of a variety of features and technology... its implementation includes:

  1. Plug and Play
  2. Power management
  3. Direct memory access (DMA)
  4. Windows Management Instrumentation
  5. Synchronization

As features such as Plug and Play are handled by the Kernel-Mode Driver Framework, it is not as complicated and has less coding in it than a similar WDM driver.

Kernel mode is an unrestrictive mode that relates to the Central Processing Unit (CPU). In it, the CPU can perform any operation allowed by its architecture. The kernel mode is also known as supervisor mode, privileged mode, master mode or supervisor state.

Some common kernel driver error messages are "kernel-driver mode cannot be installed" and "The device driver for the 'PC/AT Enhanced PS/2 Keyboard(101/102-Key)'device is preventing the machine from entering hibernation. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver."

I have both DriverCure and RegCure installed on my computer which are excellent products and only surpassed by your customer service. RegCure seems to have re-registered OK.

Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Rob Scott
