What is a printer driver?

A printer driver, also called a printer processor, plays a key role in getting your documents from the screen onto paper. It is a small software program that communicates between your software, printer and operating system. Printers use very specific instructions, while software, such as Microsoft Word or Adobe Photoshop, uses generic language. The printer driver translates the messages the two need to send to each other.

Printer drivers are different from print spoolers. This is software that "queues" your requests to print a document and schedules the printing. The Win32 application programming interface (API) does allow software to bypass the printer driver and send data straight to the print spooler. However, this approach is not commonly used.

In the Microsoft Windows environment, the printer drivers use either the Graphic Device Interface (Unidrv or PScript-based) or the XML Paper Specification (XPS). These are APIs that are responsible for representing graphic objects. If a printer natively uses the GDI, it is called a Winprinter and is often considered incompatible with other operating system. Meanwhile, the XPS is a newer page description language that allows for device and resolution independence. As of June 2009, the Ecma International approved the XPS as an open standard document format. Ecma is dedicated to standardization to communication technology and consumer electronics.

Some of the more popular printer drivers are for the HP (Hewlett-Packard) Officejet 5600 series, HP Photosmart C4200 series, HP Deskjet F4100 Printer series, HP PSC 1200 series, HP Photosmart C4400 series, HP Photosmart C7200 series and HP Deskjet F2200 series.
