What is a sound driver?

Sound drivers play a key role in the performance of sound cards. These plug-in cards enhance the computer's audio capacity. Most of them feature a digital-to-analog converter. A primary feature of most sound cards is polyphony. This means that more than one individual voice or sound can be played independently yet simultaneously.

Sound drivers ensure that the sound cards perform at their best. The driver is low-level software that relays data from the actual card to the software and operating system and vice versa. Many sound cards use their own proprietary drivers. However, through Microsoft's Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) initiative, a universal class driver has been created that may work for various sound cards. In general, specific drivers will provide enhanced performance and features.

Sound cards are also known as audio cards, sound boards or audio adapters. One of the first sound cards for the PC to gain popularity was produced by AdLib. The AdLib Music Synthesizer Card (ALMSC) was accepted by video game developers and soon became the standard for audio reproduction. Later Creative Labs' SoundBlaster line became popular.

Many competitors started to create their cards so that they could use commands written for SoundBlaster as it became the industry standard. Eventually, it was usurped by the AC'97 (audio codec '97). This is not a card, but rather an audio codec: a way of encoding sound. Developed by the Intel Architecture Labs in 1997, it is used in motherboards, modems and sound cards. Some common manufacturers of sound cards are Realtek, C-Media, M-Audio, Turtle Beach, Creative Labs and its subsidiary E-mu Systems.
