Under the Kernel-Mode Driver Framework, which was developed for Windows 2000 and later releases, any operation can be performed. This can be dangerous as poorly coded device drivers could damage your computer system.
Microsoft's answer was to create the User-Mode Driver Framework (UMDF). This device-driver platform does not have direct access to the kernel, but rather has certain privileges through an application programming interface. This offers increased protection for your PC. For example, if there is an error, the driver can restart without impacting the system.
The User-Mode Driver Framework was covertly introduced under the code name of "Crescent". It was part of the Windows Media Player and no public documentation or interfaces were rolled out. However, seeing its distinct advantages, Microsoft opted to use it was a device-driver development platform.
