What is a video driver?
Video drivers are small computer programs that allow the communication between your PC's software, operating system and video cards. They take the generic commands from your software and turn them into specific instructions the video cards can understand. Video cards are also known as graphics cards, graphics accelerators cards and display adapters. If they are integrated into the computer's mainboard, video cards are sometimes referred to as a video controller or graphics controller.
Many people are unaware of the full range of possibilities offered with their video displays. Some video cards offer enhancements like MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 decoding, video capture and TV tuner adapter. As well, video cards are often purchased by gamers to enhance their experience. There are various manufacturers of video cards, but in the 2000s ATI's Radeon and Nvidia's GeForce lines controlled most of the mainstream market.

A video driver problem often experienced by gamers is when an out-of-date driver causes slowe frame rates in a high-end game.
