What else do I need to do
when I upgrade from Windows XP to Vista?

Are you thinking about switching your PC's operating system from Windows XP to Vista? If so, there are a few things you need to think about. One is Vista device drivers, while another is Vista's hardware requirements.

Most machines with Windows XP will be able to support Vista. However, they might do so without Aero running at its best. Aero, the polished and improved graphical user interface, is one of the main reasons to migrate to the new Microsoft operating system. In general, your computer should have an Intel or AMD 1.8GHz Pentium 4 CPU with 2 GB of RAM and 80 GB of available hard drive space and a DVD drive. However, for Aero to work well your machine should also possess a DirectX 9 (or higher) 3D graphics processor that allows for 32 bits per pixel and Pixel Shader 2.0.

Now that you know that your PC can handle Vista, what about your other hardware? Even if you are buying a brand new PC with Vista, your old printer or scanner might not work on it. But why?

Vista requires different drivers for hardware devices than Windows XP. These drivers help your hardware, software and operating system communicate. Without them, instructions can become muddled or might not get across at all.

So, what do you do about Vista drivers? There are a couple different approaches. One is to scout the Internet for the drivers that you think you need. This can be a time consuming process that has no guarantee of success.

The easiest way to upgrade when you migrate to Vista is to invest in a driver software program. These programs, such as ParetoLogic DriverCure, scan you're your PC to see which drivers you need. Then it utilizes a comprehensive database to find the latest Drivers and helps you install them. This takes the hassle out of trying to make sure your have the most up-to-date versions.

Vista can provide a wide range of new and improved features. However, don't forget about your hardware and drivers.
