Why should I update my device drivers?

You shelled out your hard-earned cash for a brand new "plug-and-play" scanner/printer. It scans, prints and makes great photo copies. It works. So, why worry about updating your device drivers?

Because without updating your drivers, you won't know what you're missing.

First, it is good to understand what device drivers do. They act as translators - sending messages between your hardware, software and operating systems. Drivers put the instructions and information into a form the other components can understand. Here are just a few reasons why you need to update your drivers:

  1. Technology is always changing. New drivers let your hardware devices "keep up with the Joneses." An older graphics card might not be able to work well with the most recent gaming software unless it has a driver that can translate the newest commands. Without the current driver, your graphics card might still work but you would not be getting the most out of your equipment.
  2. Up-to-date drivers can enhance your computer system's overall stability.
  3. New drivers can bring with them new features and options.
  4. A major reason that vendors update drivers is to fix bugs. If you do not have the most up-to-date drivers, your hardware could exhibit erratic performance.
  5. A move to a new operating system (for example, Windows XP to Vista) could render your hardware useless. As well as being specific to certain hardware, device drivers also are made for one operating system. Vista drivers are required to use your old hardware to its full potential with the Vista operating system.
  6. You want to avoid corrupt drivers. Over times, corruption can occur. By installing the latest drivers, you ensure you are always up to date.
  7. Error messages such as "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" can be very frustrating. In many cases, the simplest way to keep these from popping up is to update your device drivers.
